Navigating Unfair Seasons

1 Samuel 2:7–8 (KJV)
"The LORD maketh poor, and maketh rich: he bringeth low, and lifteth up... He raiseth up the poor out of the dust... to set them among princes."
Life often brings seasons that feel unfair, especially when challenges pile up without clear reasons or solutions. Daughter of God, these times can test faith, patience, and hope. Yet, navigating through such seasons with faith offers a path to growth, resilience, and deeper trust in God’s plan. This posts touches on practical ways to handle unfair seasons while holding on to faith and purpose.
Hannah's Unfair Treatment from Peninnah
Hannah, a key figure in 1 Samuel, experiences significant unfair treatment from her rival, Peninnah. Her mistreatment involved:
Rivalry: Peninnah is the second wife of Elkanah, Hannah's husband, and she often taunts and provokes Hannah due to her inability to bear children.
Mockery: Peninnah's actions include mocking Hannah during family gatherings, particularly during religious festivals, which exacerbates Hannah's feelings of inadequacy and sorrow.
Emotional Pain: The constant ridicule from Peninnah leads to deep emotional distress for Hannah, making her feel less valued and loved within the family structure.
Divine Intervention: Hannah's suffering ultimately drives her to seek divine intervention, leading to her prayer for a child, which highlights her desperation and the severity of her situation.
Overall, Peninnah's behaviour significantly contributed to Hannah's struggles, illustrating themes of rivalry, jealousy, and the social pressures surrounding motherhood in their cultural at that time. However, it also significantly contributed to Hannah's spiritual growth and relationship with God and pursuit to receive her breakthrough.
Understanding Unfair Seasons
Unfair seasons come in many forms: unexpected loss, prolonged hardship, unanswered prayers, or feelings of being overlooked. These moments can shake confidence and lead to questions about God’s presence and purpose. Recognising that unfair seasons are part of life’s journey helps prepare the heart to face them with courage.
Life is not always balanced or predictable.
Everyone experiences hardship, but responses differ.
Faith does not guarantee an easy path but provides strength to endure. (James 1:2-4)
Embracing Faith as a Foundation
Faith is more than belief; it is a daily choice to trust God even when circumstances seem unjust. As women, we can lean the Holy Spirit, on scripture and prayer to anchor our hearts in God.
Scripture offers comfort and guidance. Verses like (Psalm 34:18) remind us that God is close to the broken-hearted.
The Holy Spirit is our comforter and guide. He is our everything. I am not sure about you but I am nothing without the Spirit of God who gives us all things and leads us into all truth. ( John 16:13)
Prayer connects us to God’s peace. Honest conversations with God help release frustration and invite His presence. (Philippians 4:6-7)
Community strengthens faith. Sharing struggles with trusted sisters in Christ provides encouragement and accountability. (Hebrews 10:24-25)
Practical Steps to Handle Unfair Seasons
1. Acknowledge Your Feelings But Do Not Meditate on Them
Suppressing emotions can lead to bitterness or despair. Allow yourself to feel sadness, anger, or confusion without guilt. Journaling or talking with a spiritual leader (Pastor, Bishop, etc) or a mentor can help process these emotions. (Psalm 56:8)
2. Focus on What You Can Control & Give God the Rest
Unfair situations often involve things beyond control. Instead of dwelling on what feels unjust, focus on actions within your reach:
Maintain daily spiritual practices like prayer and Bible reading. (Matthew 6:33)
Serve others, which shifts focus from personal pain to compassion. (Galatians 5:13)
Set small, achievable goals to regain a sense of progress. (Philippians 3:14)
Pray, pray, pray, pray... in the morning, afternoon, evening (1 Thessalonians 5:17)
3. Reframe Your Perspective
Faith invites a shift from immediate circumstances to eternal hope. Consider these reframing ideas:
Challenges can refine character and deepen faith. (Romans 5:3-5)
God’s timing differs from human timing but is always perfect. (Ecclesiastes 3:1)
Unfair seasons may prepare you for future blessings or ministry. (Jeremiah 29:11)
4. Seek Sound Support and Sound Guidance
Isolation can worsen feelings of unfairness. Reach out to:
Church leaders or counsellors for spiritual and emotional support. (Proverbs 11:14)
Solid grounded christian friends who share your faith and can pray with you. (Matthew 18:20)
Christian books or podcasts that offer encouragement and insight. (2 Timothy 3:16-17)
5. Practice Gratitude
Even in tough times, gratitude opens the heart to God’s goodness. Identify daily blessings, no matter how small, and thank God for them. This habit shifts focus from lack to abundance. (1 Thessalonians 5:18)
Real-Life Example
I will share my testimony at the next session as we anchor our faith in God as women on life's journey.
Hold onto Hope
Unfair seasons do not last forever. Faith provides a lens to see beyond present struggles toward future restoration. Remember these truths:
God’s love never fails, even when life feels unjust. (Romans 8:38-39)
Every trial has a purpose, though it may not be clear immediately. (James 1:12)
Your story can inspire others facing similar challenges. (2 Corinthians 1:3-4)
You are always loved,
